LSHS Flute Day a Success!

Ms. Hannah Rudy, Band Director at Chapel Hill High School, worked with the LSHS flute players after school on Monday, January 12. She stressed developing a consistent tone through working on long tones, developing a vibrato, proper hand position and technique, and proper embouchure. She spent a good deal of time on the difference between aperture and embouchure, and the importance of each. Ms. Rudy is a former member of the UGA Redcoat Band, where she also served as drum major her senior year. She is in her third year of teaching overall, and her second at Chapel Hill HS. The flute players truly appreciated her taking time to come and work with them, as she is busy getting her own band ready for LGPE. Anyone interested in taking lessons from Ms. Rudy should contact her directly, or let Mr. Anderson or Mr. Sargent know.

Welcome Back!

Now that students have returned from holiday break, it is time to prepare for LGPE (Large Group Performance Evaluation). This is what used to be called Festival. At LGPE, we are asked to play 3 pieces as close to perfect as possible, and 3 judges will let us know how close we come to doing so. The band will also be judged on sight reading (I will have a blog on this later!) Toward that end, the three bands at LSHS (Concert Band, Concert Winds, and Symphonic Band) will have several after school rehearsals and sectionals. These are required, and are necessary for our success. Below is a letter that will be sent home on January 8 and 9. Please look for it! Dear Band Students and Parents, Below is the schedule between today and March 13. All rehearsals and performances are required. As always, please inform us of any conflicts as soon as they are known, and then complete a make-up assignment. We are working toward our LGPE performance, which is our major event for the year. As always, if you have any questions, call or email either Mr. Anderson or Mr. Sargent. Sincerely, Kyle Sargent Paul Anderson kyle.sargent@douglas.k12.ga.us paul.anderson@douglas.k12.ga.us Concert Band (1st pd) Monday Jan 12- Flute Day 4-6 pm Saturday Jan 17- Horn Day 10am-noon Tuesday Feb 3- Full Band 4-5:30 pm Tuesday Mar 3- Full Band 4-5:30 pm Tuesday Mar 10- Winter Concert 7 pm (report 6:30 pm) Wednesday Mar 11-Friday Mar 13- LGPE (date and time TBA) Concert Winds (2nd pd) Monday Jan 12- Flute Day 4-6 pm Wednesday Jan 1- Clarinets 4-5 pm Saturday Jan 17- Horn Day 10am-noon Tuesday Jan 20- Full Band 4-5:30 pm Wednesday Jan 21- Flutes 4-5 pm Wednesday Jan 28- Alto Saxes/Horns 4-5 pm Wednesday Feb 4- Trumpets 4-5 pm Wednesday Feb 18- Low Winds 4-5 pm Tuesday Feb 24- Full Band 4-6 pm (guest conductor) Wednesday Feb 25- Percussion 4-5 pm Wednesday Mar 4- Full Band 4-5:30 pm Tuesday Mar 10- Winter Concert 7 pm (report 6:30 pm) Wednesday Mar 11-Friday Mar 13- LGPE (date and time TBA) Symphonic Band (5th/6th pds) Monday Jan 12- Flute Day 4-6 pm Tuesday Jan 13- Full Band 4-5:30 pm Wednesday Jan 14- Clarinets 4-5 pm Saturday Jan 17- Horn Day 10am-noon Wednesday Jan 21- Flutes 4-5 pm Tuesday January 27- Full Band 4-5:30 pm (possible guest conductor) Wednesday Jan 28- Alto Saxes/Horns 4-5 pm Wednesday Feb 4- Trumpets 4-5 pm Tuesday February 10- Full Band 4-5:30 pm (possible guest conductor) Tuesday February 17- Full Band 4-5:30 pm (possible guest conductor) Wednesday Feb 18- Low Winds 4-5 pm Saturday Feb 21- Full Band 9am-4pm (funds permitting) Wednesday Feb 25- Percussion 4-5 pm Monday Mar 9- Full Band 4-5:30 pm Tuesday Mar 10- Winter Concert 7 pm (report 6:30 pm) Wednesday Mar 11-Friday Mar 13- LGPE (date and time TBA)
