Okay so while sight reading the Notes App I had this question. (Mind you this is in bass clef) So say for instance you have a note with an accidental, in this case it was F sharp on the upper octave, followed by the same note on a lower octave without the accidental. My question is would that accidental also be applied to the second note even though it’s on a different partial? They both were F but would they be played different or would the accidental carry?
Hey Jarrod! Great Question! Remember accidentals carry through the measure regardless of the octave! Yes, the accidental still applies! Good for you! I hope the app helps, keep up the great work!
wow thanks .... learn something new everyday!!
What’s the tempo for October ?
I was practicing my music, all three pieces and I was looking at all the notes on the pieces. My question is, why do some composers write E# as opposed to F natural? Could it be due to the note that follows? For example in October, on measure 94, I have an E# followed by an E natural. I see this in my music often. It's in both the Circus Bee and October but I see it more commonly on chorales.
@Jade, GREAT observation! The answer to your question is theory based! Do you remember when we discussed Enharmonic Tones in class? E#/F, G#/Ab... this application of that concept. If a composer, Whitacre for example in October, begins in Eb Dorian (one of the church modes) and in order to remain in the established key you have to use accidentals or “on purposes,” as we call them, which lets us know it’s important to the quality of the chord. We also know you can’t mix sharps and flats in a key signature, so to obtain the pitch you have to use the Enharmonic Spelling... Same pitch, two note names.
@Anonymous Make sure you list your name so we know to whom we’re responding. The tempo for October is taken from the stylistic comments at the top of the piece in Italian Cantabile y motto legato; rubato assai which translates in English to Smooth and connected and in a song like manner; to be played freely. The suggested tempo marking is 60, but you have to remember to allow the tempo to breath by speeding up and slowing down in the exposed sections giving the music life
On the "notes- sight reading trainer" app, I completed all the lessons of treble clef. At first when the app took away the Letters of the notes on the piano, my accuracy decreased. However, after each lesson, my accuracy began to increase again.
Great job @Chole! The more you do it, the better and faster you’ll get with the exercises!
What would the tempo be for Circus Bee? Because on the sheet music it just says fast.
